Specialists join the team at Alnorthumbria Vets

This month Alnorthumbria Veterinary group are pleased to announce the addition of two new specialists to the team, Neil Adams an orthopaedic surgeon, and animal physiotherapist Hazel Potter. It is hoped that this will further improve the provision of care given to patients as well as minimising the need to refer patients to out of area specialists.

Neil Adams, who has worked as a veterinary orthopaedic surgeon for several years in referral practices in the United Kingdom, brings with him a wealth of experience and skills. With an in-house orthopaedic surgeon, Alnorthumbria Vets aim to minimise the amount of patients that are sent away for specialist referral treatment, which can help reduce costs, and also allows for a more personal treatment and care plan in a familiar setting.

Unfortunately it is common for dogs to sustain injury to their knees and damage their cruciate ligaments, with some breeds more prone to injury than others. Dogs that take part in activities such as agility, flyball as well as working dogs are also more at risk.  Advancements in surgical procedures and up to date surgical techniques are key in helping to make sure they make a quicker return to normal.

In addition, Hazel Potter, a qualified animal physiotherapist will offer sessions at our Wagonway surgery in Alnwick and our Fairmoor surgery in Morpeth. Physiotherapy is key in speeding up recovery, as well as an excellent addition to any canine athletes regime. It is also well received by clients with more senior pets. It is a vital addition to helping pets recover quicker from surgery, but can also be undertaken for pets that have a strenuous regime or are prone to arthritis.

Simon Caple, Director at Alnorthumbria Vets commented on the additional services now offered:

“It’s extremely exciting to have both Neil and Hazel on board, with their skills and knowledge it can only be a good thing. With an improved orthopaedic service, alongside our new physiotherapy sessions, our patients can recover faster.  So far 2014 is proving to be a great year for our service provision to our patients who we care for 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.  We take a huge amount of pride in knowing that we can provide this local provision of care every hour of every day for all creatures great and small”
